How to Harness the Power of Dopamine and Create an Action-Based Goal System

For a long time, I've been setting goals in the wrong way, focusing solely on desired results. In the past, I used to adopt a harsh mindset, believing that I couldn't be happy until I achieved certain outcomes. These types of goals are what I refer to as "results-based goals," like earning $100,000 per year. While setting such goals is not inherently bad, simply saying, "I won't be happy until I achieve this," often leads to giving up because there's no dopamine-driven motivation.

Once you have identified your desired results, it becomes crucial to establish "action-based goals." This distinction is significant because of the dopamine reward system, a chemical in our brains that motivates us. Dopamine is entirely subjective, and we can decide to release it at any given moment. One simple technique is to celebrate our accomplishments. This celebration can be as small as acknowledging our progress after making ten phone calls and saying to ourselves, "I'm so proud of you."

By doing this, our brain releases a bit of dopamine, and we become motivated to repeat the action. My manager at a sales company unknowingly used this technique on me with a clever strategy. During our phone jams, where we had to make a hundred cold calls, he gave me a bag of Skittles and instructed me to reward myself with three Skittles after every ten calls. This technique worked because the combination of the sugar rush and the sense of accomplishment from completing each set created a desire for more. This strategy can be applied to various goals by focusing on action-based goals, like showing up to the gym, and creating mini-celebrations along the way. The key is to leverage the dopamine reward system to get ourselves addicted to taking the necessary actions.


For me, every time I finish recording a podcast episode, I change my shirt and use a lot of colorful language to express my excitement and pride. This immediate celebration triggers a desire for more, and that's why I've been able to produce 1,300 episodes. The real question we should ask ourselves is, how can we create a dopamine reward system that makes it easier to take the necessary actions and actually fall in love with the process of creating the life we want?
